Demand-driven vocational training revives remote regions of Nepal

In the rural parts of Nepal, most people still live from agriculture – including in the communities of Sunapati, Doramba and Khadadevi in Ramechhap. The land and yields are barely enough to feed one’s family. Thus, almost 10,000 families live below the poverty line here.

There are hardly any earning opportunities for unskilled workers except for agriculture. That is why more and more young people are migrating to Kathmandu, India or the Arab world, where they get unskilled work – but are often exploited. Torn out of their cultural environment, homesickness and depression are often pre-programmed.

An investment in vocational training and employment promotion must be tailored to local demand. On the one hand, people need local qualification offers that interest them. At the same time, this must take into account the local demand for services. Many graduates try their hand at small business.

Intensive courses on advanced agricultural ecological cultivation methods strengthen young farmers and enable them to grow more than they need for their own needs and, if necessary, for themselves. Further processing in the cooperative is made possible, which in turn strengthens the local market.

The local NGO helps turn business ideas into reality and equips young entrepreneurs with initial tools. The groups are sustainably supported with training,

The innovative approach involves taking training directly to the villages with mobile workshops and instructors. This allows for flexibility in addressing the demand for training and apprentices locally and saves costs.

The November 2022 election campaign had a significant impact on the young democracy’s
everyday life and thus the project work had also been delayed to the beginning of 2023.

The project has set ambitious goals to be achieved within the next three years. After the initial delays, the task now is to continue the cooperation with the local authorities that has been started and the
to build on the momentum already created in order to have a sustainable impact and to enable the youth and young adults in Nepal to have a self-determined future.
