Education centers for early school leavers and child laborers in Madhya Pradesh

This project aims to end child labor through education and provides child laborers with tailored educational, physical, mental and emotional support with the ultimate goal of reintegrating children into public schools.

The training center is aimed at around 50 children between the ages of 6 and 14 and takes particular account of possible differences in the psychological and physical development of the children. The children are to be accommodated for a maximum period of 24 months. After the first year, an assessment is written for each child to measure the child’s teaching achievements. Children who reach the specified learning level after one year are transferred to a public school according to their age. The other children who have not yet reached the set learning level stay for another year. At the beginning of the second year, new children are admitted to fill the children’s positions.

The teacher-student ratio is 1:15, allowing teachers to give students more individualized attention. Because the teachers live with the children in the residential center, they are able to monitor each child’s academic progress on a day-to-day basis and resolve problems.

Hand in Hand India’s long-term goal is for the Special Education Centers to become a basic model to be replicated by local governments for the care of former child labourers.
