Integrated support for young unemployed women and men in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A key goal of the Ethiopian government is poverty eradication. A lack of income and assets to meet basic needs, lack of access to education or other basic services are among the most common causes of poverty.

The project area is in the districts of Yeka and Bole on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, with many informally built houses and people from a wide variety of population groups. Approximately 700,000 of Addis Ababa’s approximately 3.4 million inhabitants live there.

The aim of the project is to improve the socio-economic situation of unemployed young women and men and their households by imparting or improving skills and knowledge to them and other household members.

To this end, cooperation is established with formal and non-formal vocational training centers in which the young people can complete an education and receive training in technical and economic skills, in the development of financial and business plans, savings and connection to local markets, and to a better access microcredit.
Formation of income-generating measures or in urban agriculture in order to be able to set up a micro-enterprise and generate your own income.
Topics are taught such as: “Empowerment”, trust-building, leadership, gender roles, negotiation, non-violent communication, rights and duties.

Women and men should be educated on the topics of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, general and reproductive health, hygiene, nutrition and environmental hygiene.
