The main aim of the kitchen garden programme at the schools is to help as many rural families as possible to recognize the problems of malnutrition in and with their children. A lot can be changed for the better with healthy food grown on small plots of land. The aim is to reduce hunger/malnutrition and lack of education due to school drop-out by providing free daily lunches at schools and improving families’ eating habits.
Another aim is to provide pupils and teachers with theoretical and practical knowledge in connection with the cultivation and consumption of organic food and local varieties and to educate them about the negative effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on soils and the environment.
The Anisha team teaches pupils at several schools about organic gardening and permaculture techniques to make the soil more fertile and enable harvests even in times of drought. Local seed banks with indigenous varieties are being established so that families can sow and harvest annually. After the harvest, the pupils learn how to preserve the new seeds for the coming years.
