Pupils learn in and from nature – preservation of old soft fruit varieties

The Schöck-Familien-Stiftung supports the cooperation between “Slow Motion” and “Through Experience Learning eV” to establish a mother garden for soft fruit. The mother garden is built up over several years by school classes and is currently one of two mother gardens in Germany. Around 100 old varieties of soft fruit are preserved, propagated and disseminated here. The soft fruit varieties come from Switzerland to Germany, where slow motion cooperates with ProSpecieRara, a large conservation network in Switzerland.

Pupils who are looked after by the association are included in the measures:

Over a period of three years, they will transform an area of several hundred square meters into a raised bed. This measure is spread over three years in order to increase the motivation of the students as soon as possible with small successes in the cultivation and propagation of the plants. The students will plant the soft fruit varieties supervised by slow motion (currently around 60 different, old varieties) in the beds and deal with propagation, processing of the fruits and documentation of the variety.

The students also organize the dissemination of the old varieties through the sale of plants and products as well as tastings.
