Disaster-resistant wells for disadvantaged communities in the Sundarbans

Many villages on the Sundarban Islands have limited or no access to clean drinking water. The few wells are often damaged by overuse, excessive salinity of the water or by cyclones and floods. This situation forces people to consume contaminated water, which can lead to serious health problems. The scalable project aims to ensure the drinking water supply for 2000 people in these villages. Wells with raised platforms will be installed in eight locations most affected by flooding in the region. Each well will be operated and maintained by a community committee. The group has a bank account and is responsible for collecting a monthly fee from each family that uses the well. In this way, a fund is set up for regular maintenance, emergencies or repairs.
