Malnutrition is particularly problematic for children and has consequences for their health and ability to learn. However, due to the climatic conditions and lack of knowledge, the people were not able to produce enough to eat a healthy and balanced diet all year round before the project.
For this reason, a model farm and a women’s cooperative were set up in Chyangsar in 2015 to train women and qualify them with a PGS certificate for organic vegetable cultivation.
This enabled them to bring certified vegetables onto the market. In the following years, the project was expanded to Ghunsa and Merangding, and since 2021 the Schöck-Familien-Stiftung has supported the development in the community of Kunikhop.
So far, 180 out of 240 women in all 4 villages have been certified and the families can now provide themselves with sufficient vegetables.
In the current project for the years 2024 and 2025, income opportunities with (processed) vegetables will be established in the cooperative for all four villages and price calculation and joint action will be addressed more intensively.
Afterwards, the women should be able to market their products independently and continue to run the model farm.
