As a result, the potential income from cocoa cultivation falls far short of what is possible.

The approach of this project is to improve cultivation methods, productivity and market access through targeted measures. Improved skills and access to the market will enable farmers to increase their cocoa yields and thus their household income.

The project also contributes to ecological sustainability, as cocoa works particularly well in combination with shade trees and cocoa farmers therefore usually also plant trees.

Towards the end of the first project phase, the project will be evaluated internally on the basis of the monitoring data collected and the experiences of the project team. This evaluation forms the basis for the design of the second project phase. In the second project phase, the focus will be on stabilizing the application of the acquired knowledge and agricultural practices, the optional expansion of cultivation and processing to other smallholders and the establishment of smallholder structures for joint negotiations and sales (farmer groups).

Inspection of existing cocoa gardens (foto: fairventures)

Project No.: 2025-001

Funding country: Uganda

Funding location: Kasese district, Western Uganda

Funding year: since 2025

Project partner: Fairventures Worldwide FVW gGmbH

Local organization: Good Forests Foundation Uganda (GFU)

Although numerous farmers already grow cocoa in the Kasese region of Uganda, technical knowledge of best agricultural practices, post-harvest processing and fermentation as well as knowledge of the local cocoa market is limited.
